The LOTR orcs look less cgi because they weren't, lol, they were makeup and costumes. Which is why they seemed a lot more solid in some scenes. The trolls and things that where cgi in the original trilogy look inferior to the hobbit. The spiders for example look a lot better than shelob did. Which is why I'm a fan of the makeup orcs, they age better than cgi. CGI becomes dated every few years.

Yeah, there's not much cheap humour in this one, and the dialogue is limited in favor of more action. I like the slower pace of FOTR and The Unexpected Journey, but most people prefer less talking.
